Cannabis 101
Cannabis, also known as marijuana or weed, is a plant that has been used for various recreational and medical purposes for thousands of years. It contains chemical compounds called cannabinoids: the most well-known are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
Both medical and adult-use recreational marijuana are legal to purchase and use in Maine.
In recent years, the cannabis industry has experienced significant growth, leading to the development of various cannabis products in such forms as flower, edibles, concentrates, tinctures, topicals, vapes, capsules, and more.
At Hazy Moose we strive to give our patients the best experience possible; therefore the following definitions provide the variations of cannabis that might be best for your needs and preferences.
Cannabis flower, also known as the manicured buds of a female flower, has a diversity of strains available and offers a wide range of options for users, each with its own unique characteristics.
Cannabis plants are commonly categorized into three types: Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid. Indica strains are known for their relaxing and sedating effects, Sativa strains are associated with more uplifting and energizing effects, while Hybrid strains are a combination of both, offering a balance of effects. Another consideration that influences its flavor is its growing conditions and whether it’s sun-grown or grown indoors. Here’s an explanation of the variations:
- Strains: Cannabis strains refer to different genetic varieties of the plant, each with its own combination of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds. These compounds contribute to the flavor, aroma, and effects of the strain. Some well-known strains include Blue Dream, OG Kush, and White Widow.
- Phenotypes: Within a particular strain, there can be variations known as phenotypes. Phenotypes can exhibit differences in physical appearance, aroma, flavor, and effects.
- Potency: The potency of cannabis flower refers to the percentage of cannabinoids, particularly THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. Some strains may have higher THC levels, resulting in stronger effects, while others may have higher levels of other cannabinoids like CBD (cannabidiol), which can provide more therapeutic benefits without significant intoxication.
Pro-tip: Cannabis flower is commonly consumed by smoking it in a pre-roll joint, a pipe, a water bong, or a dry-herb vaporizer. Talk to Hazy Moose’s knowledgeable budtenders about your preferences for potency, desired effects, flavor profiles, and budget.
Pre-rolls, commonly known as ready-to-smoke cannabis joints, provide a convenient way to consume the cannabis flower without the need to roll your own. They are a popular choice for people who prefer a hassle-free experience.
Premium pre-rolls are made from whole cannabis nugs, providing a higher-quality experience in terms of taste and burn. These pre-rolls maintain the integrity of the flower and are often preferred by connoisseurs. On the other hand, pre-rolls made from trim, which consists of extra plant matter or trimmings, may offer a more affordable option but can have lower overall quality compared to full-nug pre-rolls.
They can be purchased individually or in multi-packs, providing flexibility for users depending on their consumption preferences.
Pro-tip: THC and CBD content varies among different brands and strains, so talk to Hazy Moose’s knowledgeable budtenders about your preferences for potency, desired effects, flavor profiles, and budget.
Edibles are food and beverages infused with cannabis, offering an alternative method of cannabis consumption.
From beverages like seltzers and sodas to sweet treats like brownies, gummies, mints and savory snacks like popcorn, edibles provide a convenient and discreet way to consume cannabis. They can be consumed in public without attracting attention or producing a strong cannabis odor.
Pro-tip: Because edibles are processed through the digestive system, they can take an hour or more to manifest fully. It’s recommended for new consumers to start with a low dose, typically 5mg of THC or less, and wait for at least two hours to assess the full effect before considering taking more. Speak with Hazy Moose’s knowledgeable budtenders to start with a low dose and gradually increase it over time. This allows you to gauge your tolerance and find the right dose for you.
Cannabis concentrates separate the desired cannabinoids and terpenes from the flower, resulting in a highly potent extract. Because concentrates can be several times stronger after inhalation, they are a popular choice for users seeking intense effects and are typically recommended for more experienced cannabis consumers. Concentrates come in many different forms, including shatter, wax, rosin, and sauce. Dab rigs are a popular method for consuming cannabis concentrates at high temperatures.
Pro-tip: With extracts, it’s important to purchase concentrates from reputable sources and to understand the product’s potency and dosage guidelines. Talk to Hazy Moose’s knowledgeable budtenders about the different forms of concentrates and the best potency for you.
Vape pens have gained popularity as a convenient and discreet way to consume cannabis. They work by heating cannabis oil or concentrate to a temperature that vaporizes it, allowing the user to inhale the vapor. They provide an excellent option for controlling your cannabis intake, especially if you’re interested in microdosing (consuming very low doses of cannabis to experience subtle effects while avoiding the more pronounced psychoactive effects.)
THC and CBD levels are listed on each package which offers a variety of strains and potencies. Vape pens come in two main forms: disposable vape pens (one-time use) and rechargeable ones with interchangeable cartridges, often referred to as “carts.”
Pro-tip: Everyone’s tolerance and preferences are different, so talk to Hazy Moose’s knowledgeable budtenders to find the dosage and experience that works best for you.
Topicals are cannabis-infused products that are specifically designed for external use. They provide localized relief and are applied directly to the skin to target specific areas of discomfort or to promote relaxation. They come in various forms, such as balms, lotions, oils, salves, creams, transdermal patches, and even bath bombs.
When applied to the skin, the cannabinoids in the product interact with the cannabinoid receptors in the skin, muscles, and tissues, potentially providing pain relief, reducing inflammation, and soothing discomfort in specific areas. Unlike other methods of cannabis consumption, topicals are typically non-intoxicating.
Pro-tip: Talk to Hazy Moose’s knowledgeable budtenders on how to conduct a patch test by applying a small amount to a small patch of skin and observing for any adverse reactions. Additionally, start with a low dosage and gradually increase as needed to find your optimal level of relief.
